Food & DrinkFood & Drink is very important to the Geopark, these Associate Partners allow visitors to soak up all the geological sights around each establishment. THE GUARDHOUSE CAFE Our café is situated on the top of Berry Head, a limestone headland which forms the southern tip of Torbay. The site is a national nature reserve and home to many rare species of flowers and insects, as well as Greater Horseshoe bats. It is an excellent spot for bird watching including migratory species in spring and autumn, and sea birds and for seeing porpoise, dolphins, seals and occasionally even whales. Additionally Berry Head holds a wide variety of living history, most notably the Napoleonic-era forts of which our café was once an integral part. We serve a range of breakfasts, lunches, cream teas, cakes, ice creams, teas and coffees and alcoholic drinks. We use local ingredients and change our menus seasonally; our aim is that everything we do lives up to this spectacular location! In recent years we have won “Best Café in Devon” awards several times and in 2018 we were selected by Taste of the West to be the best café in the south-west of England. ‘So much of the spectacular and rare wildlife on Berry Head is directly linked to the unusual geology of the cliffs, coves and caves around us and beneath our feet. We are very proud that the region is a UNESCO Geopark and love to help our customers to learn more about the unique environment they are visiting’.
