First Geopark Cycle Sportive is a resounding success22 Oct 2014
TORBAY’S first GeoPark Cycle Sportive was a resounding success with some great times recorded by Carl Allen-Dobson and Jade Rogers for the 80k course and Martin Cauldwell for the 40.
With a rolling start at 8am, riders went through Churston, Collation St Mary, Marldon, Ipplepen, Totnes, Stoke Gabriel, and Galmpton, before returning to Goodrington for both the 40k and 80k courses.
Graeme Bridle, who completed the 80km course in 4hr 28min 15sec, said: “It was a cracking event, my first sportive. It was tough but I really enjoyed it.” And Katharina Roberts from Torquay, who completed the 40k course in 2hr 25min 55sec, said: “I thoroughly enjoyed the route which was beautiful and probably just the right degree of challenging.”
The 6,000ft of ascent on the 80km course – and half that for the 40k – were more than enough for British Cycling to grade them ‘Tough’ and ‘moderate’ respectively. And the challenge of the course surprised some who chose to switch to the 40km once they had finished one lap.
